The Champa sculptures were collected from all over the Champa relics in and beyond Hue region, which consists largely of Cham sculptures in stone excavated in Tra Kieu by archaeologist Jean Yves Clayes. He distributed them among Khai Dinh Museum, Parmentier Museum in Danang, Museum of Blanchard de la Bross in Saigon and Louis Finot Museum in Hanoi. To facilitate the storage and display, the Association des Amis du Vieux Hué proposed construction of a display area of Champa antiquities at Khai Dinh Museum. On 26 December 1927 a royal decree of building a Champa antiquity section (Section des Antiquités Cham), briefly called Champa room, was released to display typical Champa sculptures.

In the introductory article on the history of Khai Dinh Museum on BAVH journal in 1929, P. Jabouille, the chairman of the museum committee, asserted:

"This section is intended to introduce a collection of antiquities symbolizing Cham art. The antiquities are entrusted to Khai Dinh Museum by the École Française d'Extrême Orient. The exhibition is studied and implemented by Mr. Jean Yves Claeys, the permanent member of the École Française d'Extrême Orient, the director of Archaeological Service. This section is placed under the scientific supervision of the École Française d'Extrême Orient. The manager of Khai Dinh Museum is responsible for managing and preserving the status quo".

After watching the exhibits of the Nguyen dynasty on display in Long An palace, visitors who wanted to study the Champa objects would be led to visit the Champa room by the museum staff.  

Through historical periods, the collection of Champa antiquities have been protected, cared and preserved as a component part of Khai Dinh Museum (now the Hue Royal Antiquities Museum), showing the special position of Champa culture in the process of formation and development of the unique values ​​of Hue culture.
